Our Methodology: Turning Fast Action into Stunning Photos

Ever wonder how we nail those split‑second shots of a goal, a slam dunk, or a hard‑hit tackle? It all starts with a clear method, not luck. We break the process into three simple stages – planning, shooting, and polishing – so even a new photographer can follow the steps and get results.

Planning: Know the Game Before the Game

Before we step onto the field, we study the sport’s flow. Is it a soccer match with steady builds and sudden bursts, or a basketball game where the pace never stops? We mark key moments – corner kicks, power plays, set pieces – and set up our camera positions accordingly. This prep work tells us where to place ourselves for the best view and which lenses will capture the action without missing a beat.

We also check the venue’s lighting. Indoor arenas need fast lenses (f/1.8 or wider), while bright daylight lets us pull back a stop for sharper depth of field. Knowing the lighting saves us from hunting for the right exposure in the middle of a fast break.

Shooting: Fast Settings, Smart Moves

When the whistle blows, we switch to a high‑speed shutter (1/1000 s or faster) to freeze motion. Continuous burst mode is a must – we shoot 10‑20 frames per second and let the camera pick the perfect moment. Autofocus is set to AI‑Servo (or its equivalent) so the focus tracks moving athletes instead of hunting.

We keep ISO as low as possible for clean images, but we’re not afraid to push it when the light drops. Modern sensors handle 3200‑6400 ISO very well, so you won’t get grainy pictures if you need that extra boost.

Composition matters even in a fast shoot. We use the rule of thirds to place the athlete off‑center, leaving room for movement. A low angle adds drama, while a high angle shows the entire play. These quick compositional habits become second nature after a few matches.

Finally, we stay flexible. If a sudden play unfolds outside our planned zone, we move quickly, re‑frame, and keep shooting. The best action shots often come from unplanned moments.

After the game, we import the bursts, flag the standout frames, and begin polishing. Basic color correction, cropping, and sharpening turn a raw capture into a photo that tells a story.

That’s the core methodology we use at JC Sports Photography: plan the game, set fast gear, shoot smart, and finish with quick edits. Follow these steps, and you’ll see a noticeable jump in the quality of your sports images.

When and how do college basketball rankings come out?

College basketball rankings typically come out every week, usually on Mondays. They're determined by two major polls - the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll. These polls are based on the votes of sports writers and coaches, respectively, who take into account the teams' performance in games during the previous week. It's an exciting time for fans as these rankings can shift dramatically due to upsets and breakout performances. Always remember, the rankings are just a snapshot of that moment in the season, and plenty can change as we approach March Madness!
